Bret Bielema thought Minnesota speech invite was joke, still hates Tim Brewster

Arkansas football coach Bret Bielema has something of a history with the University of Minnesota.

So imagine his surprise when, a year and a half ago, the former Wisconsin coach received an invite to speak to the Minnesota Football Coaches Association conference.

“I said, ‘Yeah, right. These guys hate me,'” Bielema said Friday in his address to the conference, via Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press.

So skeptical was Bielema that he checked with the coaches’ association and then-Minnesota coach Jerry Kill to make sure it was legitimate, which he was assured it was.

“So I’m feeling pretty about it and then I go write it in my calendar, and I write down April 1st,” Bielema said.

The real story, however, is the fact that six years on, the bad blood between Bielema and his former rival at Minnesota, Tim Brewster, carries on unabated, as referenced by Bielema’s comments about how Kill took over as Golden Gophers coach.

“The transition happened after another coach you guys had — that I’m not even going to talk about,” Bielema said.

The hostility stems from this incident in 2010, in which Brewster – then coach of the Gophers – accused Bielema’s Wisconsin team of running up the score. Bielema has kept on trolling Brewster as recently as 2013. It’s been six years and the pair coach at different schools in different conferences – Bielema at Arkansas, Brewster as an assistant at Florida State – but the grudge is still strong.
