Report: Chip Kelly may have had interest in Navy job

Chip Kelly

All indications are that the now-unemployed Chip Kelly will look to remain in the NFL, but apparently there may be a college gig or two that could catch his attention. The Navy job was said to be one of them.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported in his “Six Points” column that “if the Navy job had come open, [Kelly] just may have been intrigued.”

The Navy job nearly became available when head coach Ken Niumatalolo interviewed with BYU and was offered the position. Niumatalolo visited Provo and met with administrators, but he ultimately decided to remain in Annapolis.

The point of this report is not that Kelly was looking to stab Niumatalolo in the back and take his job, but that the former Philadelphia Eagles coach may want a quieter situation in his next job. Philly is one of the most intense media markets and there is tremendous scrutiny and pressure from the fans. Compared to his cushier gigs in New Hampshire and Oregon, there was no greater pressure cooker than Philly. Mort says that Kelly will not make money a priority with his new gig, so the coach may prefer a city with less intensity from the media.

The Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts fit that bill pretty well when it comes to potential NFL jobs.
