Clint Trickett retires due to concussions, hid two from trainers

Clint Trickett has retired from football and will miss West Virginia’s bowl game against Texas A&M after failing to pass concussions tests prior to the game.

Trickett, a senior quarterback from Tallahassee, says he suffered five concussions over 14 months, including two he said he hid from trainers.

“In fairness to our training staff, they didn’t know,” Trickett told reporters Friday via WVMetro News. “I didn’t tell them, so that was on me. If they would’ve known they probably would’ve been more precautions about it. But I was trying to push through it.”

Trickett suffered his latest concussion on Nov. 20 against Kansas State, missed his team’s next game, and still has not passed the protocol test.

Trickett spent his first two seasons at Florida State before transferring to West Virginia, where he has played the last two years. He completed 67.1 percent of his passes this season for 3,285 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while helping the Mountaineers to a 7-5 record.

Trickett plans to enter the coaching profession like his father, Rick, who is an offensive line coach at Florida State.

“The more and more I think about what I’m getting into, I probably need to have a couple brain cells left,” Trickett said of entering coaching.

Though Trickett wanted to be out there for the bowl game, the fifth-year senior concedes it is probably best for himself and the team to end his career.
