Colt Lyerla arrested for heroin possession

Colt Lyerla

Former Oregon Ducks tight end Colt Lyerla was arrested for one count of possession of heroin in Oregon on Sunday.

The Oregonian reported the news of the arrest, which is the latest in a long line of trouble for Lyerla.

Here’s the statement from the arresting officer about the circumstances of the arrest:

I observed him in his vehicle with what I thought at the time was a straw lighting and smoking something from tin foil. I contacted him and he threw the item in the back into the vehicle as I escorted him out. He later advised me he threw “dabs” in foil into the car. I found a brown sticky substance that I know as heroin in tin foil in the vehicle and also later in his wallet. It was later presumptively tested positive for heroin.”

The officer initially was met with some resistance from Lyerla, but the football player cooperated and did not get charged with resisting arrest. Lyerla appeared in court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to possession of heroin.

Lyerla was a star tight end in high school and was highly recruited. He caught 11 touchdowns in his first two seasons with the Ducks. His college career fizzled out in his junior season, though. In 2013, Lyerla missed a game, was suspended a game, and then quit the team. He went undrafted in 2014 but signed with the Packers. He tore up his knee during a practice and ended up waived during training camp. Lyerla recently switched to playing in the Arena Football League.

The 23-year-old has been arrested for cocaine possession in 2013; DUI in 2014; and now heroin possession in 2016.
