Everett Golson transferring to Florida State

Everett Golson

Former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson announced on Tuesday that he has decided to transfer to Florida State.

Golson had reportedly been leaning toward Florida State all along, but he visited some other big-time programs like Georgia and Florida.

“I would like to thank all of the coaches who spent time speaking with me these past few weeks and considered adding me to their football programs,” Golson told Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports in a statement. “Their interest and sincerity was truly humbling. After much thought and careful consideration, I will utilize my fifth year of eligibility to join the Florida State University Seminoles. To coach Jimbo Fisher, the Florida State football team, staff, alumni and fans, thank you for allowing me to become part of the Seminoles family. I can’t wait to get started.”

Florida State, of course, has an opening at quarterback with Jameis Winston having gone to the NFL. The Seminoles should present Golson with a chance to contend for a national championship immediately.

Golson led Notre Dame to the BCS National Championship Game in 2012, but he missed the 2013 season while serving a suspension for an academic scandal. He won back his starting job in 2014 before struggling with turnovers. Sophomore quarterback Malik Zaire took advantage of the opportunity with Golson struggling, and he seemed to emerge as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback of the future down the stretch.
