Jalen Hurts reveals advice he got from Deshaun Watson

Deshaun Watson

Jalen Hurts and Deshaun Watson were adversaries in last season’s National Championship Game, but now the latter is happy to offer advice to the former.

Ahead of Monday’s Sugar Bowl game against Clemson, Hurts revealed that he reached out to Watson for guidance and the ex-Tigers star happily obliged.

“Deshaun’s done what I’m trying to do,” said the Alabama quarterback, according to Chris Low of ESPN. “So I hit him up, and we had a really good conversation and he had some really good advice for me and told me how he overcame it. I took what he told me and tried to apply it.

“He told me to be fearless and go get it,” Hurts continued. “He recognized the dog mentality in me, the ‘it’ factor in me. That’s how we compare and, I think, the reason we connected.”

Watson, now the star QB for the Houston Texans, dueled with Hurts and Alabama in the CFP title game in January and ultimately secured the narrow 35-31 win for Clemson. But Watson was once in Hurts’ shoes as he and the Tigers suffered a narrow 45-40 loss to Bama in the title game the year before.

Fate has it that the two teams will meet again this season for a third straight year (this time in the CFP semifinal), and this is further evidence that they will always have a strong mutual respect for one another.
