Jameis Winston not attending draft so he can be with grandmother

Jameis Winston

Jameis Winston has a better chance than anyone of being the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft next month, but the former Florida State star likely will not be in attendance at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago to shake Roger Goodell’s hand when his name is called. Why? Because he plans to spend the day with his grandmother.

After he was finished working out in front of scouts and reporters at Florida State’s pro day on Tuesday, Winston was asked why he will be staying home. He said he is considering skipping the big event to be with his grandmother, who has Type-2 diabetes and can’t travel.

Unless you are convinced Winston is lying, it’s awfully hard to argue with his reason for staying home. There has been some speculation that the NFL pressured him to skip the draft because he could attract negative attention, but Winston says the decision was based strictly on his family.

If you ask his former coach, there aren’t even any serious off-field issues that would warrant Winston being booed at the draft. But if there ever was a good reason to stay home, being with your grandmother is it.
