Jimbo Fisher says QB Kellen Mond had better camp than Nick Starkel

Jimbo Fisher

Jimbo Fisher has chosen his starting quarterback to begin his coaching career at Texas A&M, and it’s a bit of a surprise.

Fisher is going with Kellen Mond as his starter over Nick Starkel. On Wednesday, the Aggies head coach explained his decision.

“I just think he had a better camp. He’s worked very hard, he understands defenses and protections much better. I’m proud of the work he’s done,” Fisher said of Mond, via the Austin-American Statesman.

Both Mond and Starkel are sophomores, but the surprise is that Starkel opened and closed last season as A&M’s starter under previous head coach Kevin Sumlin. Mond only took over as the starter after Starkel broke his ankle in the opener against UCLA.

Starkel completed 60 percent of his passes last season for 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. Mond was a 51.5 percent passer for eight touchdowns and six interceptions, but he’s a rushing threat who ran for 340 yards and three TDs.

Even though Mond will start on Thursday against Northwestern State, Starkel is also expected to play.
