Lane Kiffin reportedly contacted about 49ers offensive coordinator job

Lane Kiffin

Lane Kiffin’s name has been buzzing in the coaching profession ever since he helped coach Alabama to a national championship. He has been mentioned as a potential head coaching candidate, and it sounds like at least one NFL team has tried to contact him.

Niners Nation reports that Kiffin was contacted by the San Francisco 49ers about their offensive coordinator job.

The report makes plenty of sense. Geep Chyrst served as offensive coordinator this season, but he reportedly was fired as part of a big purge of assistant coaches Tuesday.

Kiffin also has a strong relationship with Chip Kelly, who was hired last week by the Niners. After being fired by the Philadelphia Eagles, Kelly spent some time with Bama’s coaching staff prior to the national championship game.

“It was good to have Chip come in and just spend some time with him, talk about some different things,” Kiffin said at the time. “It was really good to see him. I’ve always had a good relationship with him, and it’s always good to be able to bring some people in to get some ideas from.”

Kiffin has spent the past two seasons at Alabama following his firing by USC. In that time he has certainly rebuilt his stock as a coach. If he decides to leave his position at Alabama, we’re guessing it would be for another head coaching job, not a coordinator position, even if that position is in the NFL.
