Mack Brown discusses Charlie Strong firing by Texas

Mack Brown

The man who preceded Charlie Strong as the head coach at Texas shared his thoughts on Saturday about Strong being fired by the school.

Mack Brown, who won a national championship at Texas before stepping down in 2013, was serving as a commentator on ABC when he talked about the Longhorns’ decision to replace Strong with Tom Herman.

“Charlie had to win more games,” Brown said of Strong. “I was 1-10, 1-10 at North Carolina, went 6-4-1. You can stay then. Coaches are making too much money.”

Brown then said he thought the hiring of Herman from Houston was a “great” one.

“I think Tom Herman’s a great hire. Texas folks will be really excited about that,” said Brown.

Brown made reference to his consecutive 1-10 seasons to start his coaching career at North Carolina. In that third year, he showed great improvement and then followed with seven straight strong seasons. Contrarily, Strong’s team did not appear to show any improvement after three seasons.

Strong recruited well, but the results did not show on the field. Strong finishes his Texas career with a 16-21 record, which gives him the worst winning percentage in school history.
