Mark Richt being recruited to run for governor of Georgia

Mark Richt

Mark Richt has many more job options on his plate than just college coaching opportunities.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that some Georgia Republicans are trying to push the Bulldogs head coach to run for state governor in 2018.

Richt was fired Sunday by Georgia as head coach of the football program, but he is a popular figure in the state after largely enjoying success over the past 15 years. He also seems to have some of the requisite skills for the job — familiarity with some of the state administrators, experience dealing with the media, and experience delivering messages and public speeches. His political leanings are also said to be to the right.

Despite some potentially pushing the coach to run for office, the AJC says Richt is unlikely to do so.

Richt, 55, says he has already heard from multiple schools since being fired by Georgia (though he will stay on to coach the team in its bowl game). Maryland, South Carolina, Missouri and Miami could be some of the schools with interest in the two-time SEC Coach of the Year.
