‘Michigan’ street near Notre Dame appropriately renamed ahead of big game

Michigan and Notre Dame are set to square off in arguably the biggest game of college football’s opening weekend, and an important change has been made to one of the streets in South Bend in advance of the showdown.

As WNDU 16 in Indiana noted, a street in downtown South Bend called Michigan Street has been renamed this week. It will temporarily be known as Fighting Irish Drive — at least until the Wolverines leave town.

While unveiling the new street sign, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg shared a personal account of why he is so excited for Saturday night’s game.

“The last time we played Michigan was 2014. I had to find a way to watch the game at a ridiculous hour I think it was 2:00 in the morning in Kabul which took a lot of effort,” he said. “It’s going to be a lot easier this time now that I’m in South Bend and so is the game.”

We’ve seen even bigger changes made by municipalities because of college football games in the past, so the fact that Notre Dame is having some fun before it kicks off its season is no surprise. The Irish are ranked No. 12 in the preseason polls and Michigan is ranked No. 14, so the game should provide plenty of entertainment.
