Mike Weber’s high school coach upset with Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer sad

Mike Weber’s high school coach expressed his unhappiness with Urban Meyer during a radio interview on Friday.

Weber is one of the top running back recruits in the country and originally committed to his home school Michigan, but de-committed amid Brady Hoke’s disastrous season. The Cass Tech (Detroit) product then flipped to Ohio State and signed with the school on signing day Wednesday. But not all was well for Weber after Buckeyes running backs coach Stan Drayton, who recruited him, announced Thursday that he was leaving for the Chicago Bears. Weber tweeted his disappointment, making it seem like he was unaware the man recruiting him was planning to leave.

In response to the seemingly deceptive practice by the Buckeyes, Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher had some criticism for Meyer and the Buckeyes.

“I think It’s a black eye on the university,” Wilcher said of Ohio State’s recruiting practices in an interiview with 105.1. “Because hey’re out there getting these young men under false pretenses.

“I think Urban Meyer will have to step his game up; we’re going to have to talk. He has come to my school and got the No. 1 athlete out of my school two years in a row … but you cannot come over here, come up to the north, and walk out of here with your pockets full and not give us respect. That’s the most important thing. You have to respect us. That’s not gonna happen again, I call tell you that right now.”

In addition to Weber, the Buckeyes got Joshua Alabi from Cass Tech this season. They also got CB Damon Webb Jr. from the Cass Tech program last year.

Wilcher then talked about commitment and how it should work both ways.

“He wanted to stay committed, he wanted to show he understands about commitment,” Wilcher said of Weber. “They’re at least supposed to show him the same type of courtesy.”

Wilcher does not have an issue with Drayton trying to step up in the coaching world, he just feels they should have been transparent and honest with Weber. He also says he is waiting to hear from Meyer about the matter.

Wilcher described Weber as hurt by the Buckeyes and says he is going through a lot of embarrassment at school from people who were upset he was going to play for the rivals, but he does believe Webber will ultimately stick to his Ohio State commitment.
