Missouri to interview Utah State coach Matt Wells

Matt Wells Utah State

Missouri is in the market for a new head coach with Gary Pinkel retiring, and their attention is now on Matt Wells.

PowerMizzou.com’s Gabe DeArmond reports that the Tigers are going to interview Wells, who has been the head coach at Utah State since the 2013 season.

Wells took over from current Oregon State coach Gary Andersen at Utah State and went 9-5, 10-4, and now 6-6 this season.

In addition to Wells, Missouri has spoken with Temple’s Matt Rhule about their job, but it sounds like Rhule will not be taking the gig.

Missouri completed their season with a loss on Saturday to Arkansas to finish 5-7. With head coach Gary Pinkel retiring due to his non-Hodgkins lymphoma, the program opted not to play in a bowl game this season.

The Missouri job has some appeal being in the SEC East. Kentucky and Vandy are only middling programs; South Carolina needs a new coach, as does Georgia; and the only other programs to have good seasons were Florida and Tennessee. There is some opportunity to succeed at Missouri, though there are some concerns about the college’s administration.
