Nebraska names true freshman Adrian Martinez starting QB

Scott Frost Nebraska

Nebraska will have a new face at the quarterback position to begin the 2018 season, and it will be a player who has never taken part in a collegiate game before.

Cornhuskers head coach Scott Frost announced on Sunday that true freshman Adrian Martinez will start the team’s season opener against Akron next weekend. Martinez beat out redshirt freshman Tristan Gebbia.

Martinez was the most noteworthy signing in Frost’s first recruiting class with Nebraska, so it’s no surprise he won the starting job. Martinez was originally verbally committed to Tennessee before switching to Nebraska after Frost began recruiting him.

Martinez scored four touchdowns in Nebraska’s spring game back in March and has shown he can be a dual-threat quarterback, which should fit Frost’s system nicely.
