NFL scout reportedly worried about ‘influence of family’ on Johnny Manziel

Johnny ManzielJohnny Manziel is reportedly expected to decalre for the NFL Draft after playing in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Tuesday. That is hardly shocking news, but we still have no idea where Manziel could be drafted come April. Experts and analysts have had him going from anywhere in the top five picks to out of the first round altogether.

As we know, there are a number of concerns surrounding Manziel’s off-field behavior. Simply put, he loves to party. But according to Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, one NFL scout wonders if Manziel’s family could also be an issue.

This player personnel director expressed no concern over the off-the-field headlines that generated so much negative attention in the spring of ’13.

The knock this player personel director had on Manziel wasn’t his height, but the concern of whether Manziel can endure the NFL’s 16-game schedule, the influence of Manziel’s family, and …

‘This guy thinks he can do everything. He tries to do too much,” he said. “He thinks he can do all of it. But he’s special. I think he can play.'”

Manziel’s father Paul, who has always been supportive of Johnny’s unruly behavior and chalked it up to him being a college kid, once said that he is worried Johnny could have an ugly unraveling. The reasons he cited for his concerns were the spotlight on Manziel and attention he receives away from the field. It would stand to reason that the spotlight will be even brighter when Manziel enters the NFL.

While we don’t know exactly what the scout was referring to, the comment is certainly interesting. Perhaps he thinks Manziel’s family enables him rather than steering him in the right direction.
