Ohio State has rules in place to avoid dropping ball in celebration before TD

Urban-Meyer-Oregon-reaction

Premature celebration has been a huge issue in the early part of the college football season, and it has cost more than one team a touchdown. In order to prevent it from happening to the Ohio State Buckeyes, Urban Meyer has two very important rules in place.

When asked about players dropping the ball in celebration before they cross the goal line, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett said there would be serious consequences if he or his teammates did it.

“Yeah, here’s the rule — and we do have rules [for scoring],” Barrett told reporters Wednesday, via Austin Ward of ESPN.com. “When you score, you hand the ball to an official and you go hug a big guy. That’s the rule. If anybody got away from that and dropped the ball before they crossed the end zone and the other team recovered it, I could only imagine what that day would be like for that man — or the rest of the year — with Coach [Urban] Meyer. I just couldn’t tell you how awful that might be.”

If you don’t have the ball still in your possession before crossing the goal line, there’s no way you could hand it to the official. As for what the penalty would be for violating the rules, Barrett said he can only imagine.

“I gave you the rules, but as for the consequences, God, I don’t know, he said. “That’s a rough day at the office.”

You’d think players would have learned from DeSean Jackson, but the “drop the ball before I cross the goal line” play has yet to become extinct. At least Florida State running back Dalvin Cook wasn’t celebrating when it happened to him (video here).
