Report: Phillip Ely’s request for sixth year of eligibility denied

Phillip Ely Toledo

Phillip Ely’s swan song will be in the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday, unfortunately.

Ely, the star quarterback for the Toledo Rockets, was denied a sixth year of eligibility, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy.

Ely began his college career at Alabama where he redshirted in 2011 and then threw four passes in 2012. He sat out the 2013 season after transferring to Toledo, and then his 2014 didn’t go as hoped when he suffered a season-ending knee injury during the team’s second game.

Ely finally got a chance to shine this season and put up big stats for the Rockets, throwing for 2,680 yards and 21 touchdowns. Sadly for him due to injury and a transfer, this was the only real season he got to play. At least he got to show the country what he could do when healthy — Toledo is 9-2 and a win over Arkansas really put them on the map this season.
