Police called to fight between Florida players that started over missing cleats

Skyler-Mornhinweg

Two Florida football players were reportedly involved in a fight on campus Monday evening that resulted in police being called. According to GatorBait.net, freshman defensive end Gerald Willis III and sophomore quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg got into a physical altercation over a pair of football cleats.

Police confirmed that both players struck each other but agreed to withdraw the complaint. No charges were filed and a Florida spokesperson described the scrum as “just a misunderstanding between two teammates.” Mornhinweg reportedly told police that his cleats went missing and were found in Willis’ locker. He later confronted Willis and things got physical.

“Looks like a fight between two individuals, both are listed as suspect, both are listed as victims, so they hit each other,” Major Brad Barber of the University of Florida Police Department explained. “They were involved in a fight [Monday] evening. It appears that both have withdrawn the complaint. There will be no charges.”

Willis said in his statement to police that he pushed Mornhinweg and the quarterback responded by hitting him in the chin. Willis says he then struck Mornhinweg — who was treated for a cut on his lip — in the mouth.

Fights between teammates happen all the time, but the fact that police had to get involved is pretty embarrassing. Plus, we’re talking about a “stolen” pair of cleats between two people over the age of 7. Between Monday’s incident and Florida’s new starting quarterback being investigated for sexual assault, the Gators have had a rough few days since their huge win over Tennessee.
