Police think Philip Lutzenkirchen was drinking, not wearing seat belt

Philip LutzenkirchenPolice suspect that Philip Lutzenkirchen and Joseph Ian Davis were not wearing seatbelts when they were ejected from a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe during single-car crash early Sunday morning that left both of them dead and two other passengers injured. Police also believe alcohol was consumed by all four people.

AL.com shares details regarding the fatal crash:

Davis failed to stop at a stop sign at a T-intersection, crossing an intersecting road and impacting a ditch at an unknown speed before traveling an additional 89 feet and striking another ditch, according to the report. The vehicle traveled further along the edge of a church driveway before hitting a fence, going airborne for 42 feet and overturning several times near Upper Big Springs and Lower Big Springs roads.

Lutzenkirchen, a former Auburn tight end, was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene. Davis was partially ejected and also was dead when authorities arrived.

Blood toxicology tests were performed on Lutzenkirchen and Davis, but the results will not be available for weeks.

Lutzenkirchen is most strongly known for catching the go-ahead touchdown pass from Cam Newton in the fourth quarter of Auburn’s comeback and victory over Alabama in the 2010 Iron Bowl. He caught 59 passes for 628 yards and 14 touchdowns at Auburn.
