Report: Texas receiving ‘extreme pressure’ from boosters to hire Tom Herman

In a rather strange turn of events, Houston’s big upset of Louisville could cost Charlie Strong his job.

Texas administrators are receiving “extreme pressure” from boosters to replace Strong with Houston coach Tom Herman after the Cougars stunned No. 5 Louisville on Thursday, according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN.

The belief was that Strong could have kept his job by winning out against Kansas and TCU, which would have taken the team to 7-5. In October, boosters had cooled on Herman a bit following Houston’s losses to Navy and SMU, the latter considered particularly bad due to being to a weaker team within the state of Texas. One source even said Herman to Texas was “dead in the water” following the loss to SMU.

That has all changed with the upset of Louisville, with boosters now salivating over Herman again. They are said to be concerned that Herman will be a top candidate for virtually every other possible opening, including those at LSU and Oregon. They are also wary that Texas A&M could get rid of Kevin Sumlin with the intention of grabbing Herman.

Herman joining the Longhorns has long been rumored. It seems likely, though, that Texas will let the season finish up before taking any further steps.
