Report: Texas will fire Charlie Strong, possibly Monday

Charlie Strong

The Texas Longhorns have decided to fire head coach Charlie Strong, and the announcement could come on Monday, according to a report.

The Austin American Statesman shares the news on Strong and says Texas has “for sure” made the decision to dump Strong. The only issue is when Texas will make the announcement.

The decision to fire Strong is not in the least bit surprising.

Strong had pressure on him entering the season to win and prove that improvements were being made from his 6-7 and 5-7 seasons during his first two years as head coach. Things started off well with a win in the opener over Notre Dame, but that looked much less impressive once the Fighting Irish struggled to a losing record. Then Texas lost three in a row and four out of five, increasing all the chatter that Texas might fire Strong. Reports said if they were to make the move, it wouldn’t come until after the season.

Texas has one game left in the regular season — a contest Friday against TCU. The 5-6 Longhorns would need a win to get to .500 for the season.

Strong has two years and $10.7 million left on his contract. Texas is expected to target Houston coach Tom Herman for the position.
