Texas refused offer to play Houston in exchange for lowering Tom Herman buyout
The Texas Longhorns were obviously impressed with what Tom Herman was able to do with the Houston football program, but that doesn’t mean they want to schedule a game against their new coach’s former team.
On Monday, Houston athletic director Hunter Yuracheck revealed that the Cougars offered Texas a chance to reduce Herman’s $2.5 million buyout by agreeing to play a home-and-home football and basketball series. The Longhorns declined.
“At this point there does not appear to be an interest from Texas,” Yurachek said, per Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle. “It’s not an option that is on the table any longer.”
The two schools have not played in football since 2002 and basketball since 2001, and apparently that is the way Texas wants it to stay.
This is just more reason Houston reportedly wanted to structure the contract of its next head coach in a way that would make it less likely for something like this to happen again. Getting $2.5 million from Texas will be nice, but that’s clearly not what Houston wanted.
