Report: Tom Herman has firm coaching offer from LSU

Tom Herman Houston

Things are getting even more interesting in the coaching carousel, especially for the Texas Longhorns and LSU Tigers.

Horns Digest’s Chip Brown reported on Thursday that Tom Herman has a firm coaching offer from LSU, but that the current Houston head coach is reluctant to accept until he knows what is going on at Texas.

LSU fired Les Miles earlier this season and has Ed Orgeron as their interim head coach, but they apparently have made Herman their target. This chatter is somewhat surprising given all the reports saying LSU was planning a run at Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher. If Brown’s report is to be believed, perhaps LSU put feelers out to Fisher and found out he wasn’t interested in the job, so they moved on to Herman.

Texas now needs to figure out its future or risk having one of the top candidates eliminated from contention. They have said all along that they will evaluate current head coach Charlie Strong after the season. Many thought the loss to Kansas last weekend would cost Strong his job three years into his five-year deal with Texas. However, a new report said Strong would have a chance to keep his job with a win against TCU on Friday.

Horns Digest’s report says that the hefty buyouts for Strong and his staff — which amount to just over $17 million — are factors in Texas’ decision, and weigh in Strong’s favor. Texas is 5-6 this season.
