Urban Meyer on coaching in NFL: ‘Not right now’

Urban Meyer Ohio State

What Urban Meyer did with Ohio State this season is easily one of the most remarkable coaching jobs in college football history. After losing two Heisman Trophy candidates in a three-month span, Meyer led his team to a national championship with a third-string sophomore.

Meyer has now won three national championships since 2006. He has nothing left to prove at the collegiate level, but that doesn’t mean he is thinking about making a jump to the NFL — yet.

“Not right now,” Meyer said Tuesday, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “I have a commitment to Ohio State and these players.”

The fact that Meyer would not rule out coaching in the NFL says it all. He left Florida after winning two titles because he wanted a new challenge. He then took an Ohio State program that dealt with a postseason ban and returned it to its place atop the college football world.

Here’s an insane stat for you:

Meyer is only 50, which is young by coaching standards. The NFL didn’t work out for Nick Saban, but that doesn’t mean Meyer would have the same results. He’s much less hard-headed than Saban and is known for being more of a player’s coach. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t wind up coaching in the NFL at some point.
