Urban Meyer rips Evan Spencer for his comments about Alabama, Florida State

urban-meyerOhio State wide receiver Evan Spencer expressed confidence in his team’s BCS National Championship Game hopes on Monday by telling reporters he feels the Buckeyes would “wipe the field” with either Alabama or Florida State. The comments may have seemed like innocent smack talk to some, but Urban Meyer was infuriated by them.

“I’m very disappointed. I can’t stand that,” Meyer said during a teleconference on Tuesday, via The Plain Dealer. “He certainly is not the spokesman for our team. As a result, Evan won’t talk to the media for a long, long time.

“You don’t do that. That’s not good sportsmanship and that’s not what we expect. I understand he’s a young man and made a minor mistake, but we just don’t do that. You talk about your teammates, talk about the team and move on.”

Spencer, who obviously received an earful from his coach, apologized on Twitter Monday night.

“I did not mean to disrespect any FB team today,” the junior wrote. “I am confident in my team, and as is evident in the video, I was having fun with the media answering their questions. I should have chosen my words more wisely. There was no intent to disrespect any other team.”

In his defense, Spencer had a smile on his face when he was answering questions. It didn’t seem like he was trying to stir the pot at all or be disrespectful, but you can understand why Meyer was upset. Alabama and Florida State are No. 1 and No. 2 in the rankings for a reason. All the Buckeyes can do is focus on their own schedule and hope someone slips up. Beating their chests won’t accomplish anything.
