Wilton Speight took reps during Michigan’s practice

Wilton Speight

Don’t count Wilton Speight out of Michigan’s big game against Ohio State on Saturday just yet.

Speight injured his left shoulder in Michigan’s loss to Iowa a week and a half ago and did not play in the team’s game against Indiana over the weekend. Reports said he suffered a broken collarbone and would be out for the regular season, but Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh said that was not the case and that Speight was day-to-day.

Now, according to what wide receiver Amara Darboh said Tuesday, Speight took reps at quarterback in practice.

“We’re getting reps from both guys and just trying to make sure we’re on key, make sure the timing’s right,” Darboh said after practice, referring to both Speight and John O’Korn. “Both guys are very poised, like I said earlier and both guys are great competitors, so I think regardless of who it is, I think they’re going to give it their all when it comes Saturday.”

O’Korn started and played in the Wolverines’ 20-10 win over Indiana. He was 7 of 16 for 59 yards passing and rushed for 19 yards. It’s hard to put a lot of stock into the numbers given the weather conditions for the game, but you figure Michigan would love to have their No. 1 starter under center against Ohio State rather than O’Korn.

Darboh’s comments do not mean Speight will play, but they do indicate he at least could have a chance to play. The comments will also give Ohio State something else to think about and more reason to prepare for both QBs.
