Surfer Carlos Burle rides possibly the biggest wave ever surfed (Video)

Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle road a storm surge off the coast of Nazare, Portugal on Monday that may have been the largest wave ever surfed. According to Deadspin, early reports have estimated that the wave was somewhere in the range of 100 feet high. If that’s the case, Garrett McNamara’s record of riding a 78-foot wave at the same beach in 2011 would be easily broken.

McNamara chose not to surf on Monday, telling reporters that the wave was “too big” and that he didn’t feel it was safe. Fortunately, Burle lived to tell the tale.

“If you do that test, when you get a whole bunch of surfers stacked one on top of another, it looks like it might be one of the biggest ever,” Burle told Stab Magazine after conquering the beast. “I don’t want to be the one who calls it. It’s hard to tell. Someone else can tell me how big it was (laughs).

“I don’t know – it’s not impossible (that it was 100 feet). There was a lot of space on that wave. I don’t know how big it was. It was bigger than Garrett’s wave last year; that we can see clearly. Whatever the case or the size I am just very lucky, I’m happy to have been in the spot at the time.”

I hope some day I can be 1/000th as gnarly as this bro is, but I know it will never happen.
