Dennis Haysbert aka Pedro Cerrano actually hit those home runs in ‘Major League’

Pedro Cerrano

Classic sports movie “Major League” debuted in theaters 25 years ago on Monday. To celebrate the occasion, Yahoo! Sports’ Mike Oz spoke with people associated with the movie and wrote a fantastic post where he shared 15 tidbits that you might not have known about the film.

If you loved “Major League” — and we’re guessing you did since you’re also reading LBS — then we highly highly recommend you read it. To whet your appetite, we’ll share one great tidbit that Oz posted about.

According to writer/director David S. Ward, Dennis Haysbert, who played Cuban voodoo slugger Pedro Cerrano, was the only actor who could actually hit a home run.

“Every time I was supposed to hit a home run in the movie, I did,” Haysbert told Oz.

Haysbert was a multi-sport athlete in high school, but he didn’t play baseball past Little League. At 6-foot-4, he obviously had enough strength and coordination to club the ball out of the park. And he enjoyed his time on the movie so much he joined an adult league afterwards to keep playing.

Those clips of Cerrano looking intimidating and actually connecting for big blasts in the movie looked real, and now we know why.

That’s just one tidbit we’ll share. Another one you already know from two years ago — Charlie Sheen took steroids for the movie — but there are still many other great anecdotes that you’ll love.

Man, that was such a great movie.
