Baker Mayfield: Biggest adjustment is calling plays

Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield has a long adjustment period ahead of him as he embarks upon his NFL career.

The former Oklahoma Sooners star had an excellent college career and parlayed that into becoming the No. 1 pick in the draft this year. Though many top picks are expected to play and produce immediately, the Cleveland Browns are expected to take things slowly with Mayfield, who acknowledges he has to make some adjustments.

Mayfield was at the ESPYs in Los Angeles on Wednesday and talked about what adjustments he needs to make.

“The big thing for me is calling the plays in the huddle and footwork,” Mayfield said on ESPN. “So whether it’s footwork and just dropping back — because I was out of the (shotgun) a lot — and that’s nothing to be ashamed of; that’s just what we did. I enjoyed that and so now I’m just trying to get used to (being) under center and calling plays.”

As Mayfield said, he operated out of the shotgun in college and will need to adjust to the play-calling process and the dropback from under center. He should have time to work on that as he learns behind Tyrod Taylor, who is said to be well ahead of him in their competition.
