Brandon Browner reveals Saints will release him

Brandon Browner

Brandon Browner gave a strong indication on Friday that the New Orleans Saints plan to release him when the offseason begins.

League rules prevent teams from officially releasing players until after the Super Bowl, but it sounds like the Saints have already sat down for a discussion with Browner, who posted a farewell to New Orleans on social media.

The Saints signed Browner to a three-year, $15 million contract last offseason that included $7.5 million guaranteed. The 31-year-old was easily one of the worst defensive backs in the NFL, leading the league in penalties and “anchoring” an abysmal Saints secondary.

The most notable things Browner did in 2015 were not on the field, as he once went off on a reporter after a loss and then got into this epic Twitter beef with Shannon Sharpe.

Browner was an important piece of a New England Patriots defense that won Super Bowl 49, but he proved he is not capable of being a shutdown cornerback without help from guys like Darrelle Revis. He won’t get nearly as much money in his next deal.
