Brian Hoyer benched in Week 6 against Redskins

The San Francisco 49ers got off to another horrendous start while searching for their first win of the season on Monday, and head coach Kyle Shanahan decided to make a change at quarterback.

Midway through the second quarter, Brian Hoyer was benched in favor of rookie third-round pick C.J. Beathard. Hoyer completed just 4-of-11 passes for 34 yards before getting pulled, and the Niners were trailing 14-0 at the time.

Hoyer has a history with Shanahan dating back to when the two were with the Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco signed the 32-year-old to a two-year deal this past offseason not long after hiring Shanahan as their new head coach.

Heading into Sunday’s game, Hoyer had completed 59 percent of his passes for 1,211 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He had an unimpressive passer rating of 75.8. It was only a matter of time before Shanahan was forced to make a change.
