Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton did not make many new friends at the 2012 Pro Bowl. Several players from the game reportedly said he acted like a “total a-hole” in Honolulu, giving off the impression that he thought he was the star of the show. In fact, one player who was on his team believes Newton owes everyone $25,000 — each Pro Bowl winner’s share.
Former San Francisco 49ers long snapper Brian Jennings felt as though Newton’s lack of preparation cost the NFC a victory.
“Cam Newton owes me $25,000, a lot of people don’t know that,” Jennings said on KNBR’s Murph and Mac Show Wednesday morning, per Kevin Lynch of SFGate.com. “We have Drew Brees with his playbook all week, studying. … We have Cam Newton with his head phones on all week goofing off.
“We go into the game, and this guy is chucking the ball all over the place, and everybody is looking around going, ‘What’s this guy doing? Are you kidding?’ The punter and I look at each other and say, ‘We are going to have a long second half.’ We punted five times.”
Newton is not the first person to take the all-star game lightly. After the Pro Bowl where Newton completed 9-for-27 passes with two touchdowns and three interceptions, Aaron Rodgers questioned some players who did not put forth any effort. LeSean McCoy openly admitted he was one of them. Still, Jennings puts a lot of blame on Newton.
“He went in there and stank it up,” Jennings added. “He never looked at his playbook and he’s chucking the ball all over the place. He can’t hit the open guy.”
Cam has also been selected to the 2014 Pro Bowl, so we may get a chance to see if he gives more effort this time around. As of now, he’s hoping he’s unavailable the weekend the game is played.Google+
