Report: Broncos were concerned about Robert Griffin III’s character

Robert Griffin

When Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans, there was speculation that the Denver Broncos could turn their attention toward Robert Griffin III. They ultimately decided not to pursue the former first-round pick, but that may not have been because of RG3’s abilities.

According to Mike Klis of KUSA, Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway was “concerned” about Griffin’s character. Because of that, the Broncos reportedly never expressed interest in RG3.

Many feel that Griffin helped his stock by not becoming a distraction for the Washington Redskins last season. He was hardly given a shot under Jay Gruden and wasn’t even the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, but he remained quiet for the most part and dealt with the situation like a professional.

So what character concerns could Elway have had? Griffin took home NFL Rookie of the Year honors in 2012, but he had several public disagreements with former Redskins coach Mike Shanahan. Last year, Shanahan opened up about some of the issues he had with RG3. You can read more about that here.

As you know, Shanahan was the head coach of the Broncos when Elway led the team to two Super Bowl championships. It would make sense for Elway to consult Shanahan if he was considering signing RG3, and Shanahan might not have given Griffin a stellar report card.
