Browns still have plays in place for Johnny Manziel

Johnny Manziel tape Browns

The Cleveland Browns have made the unpopular decision to stick with Josh McCown as their quarterback, but that doesn’t mean Johnny Manziel won’t be part of the game plan when McCown starts.

On Thursday, Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo said that he would not rule out using Manziel against the San Diego Chargers this weekend.

“That’s always a possibility,” DeFilippo said, per Mary Kay Cabot of Northeast Ohio Media Group. “To say we don’t have plays ready for Johnny Manziel against the San Diego Chargers, I’d be lying to you. OK? I’d be lying to you. So you never know. We may use them and we may not.”

As long as McCown stays healthy, it doesn’t sound like Manziel should hold his breath — at least for this week.

“That’s the competitive advantage of showing up and playing an opponent on Sunday,” DeFilippo added. “They don’t know what we’re going to do and we don’t know what they’re going to do.”

Browns coach Mike Pettine said last year that he had not ruled out using a two-quarterback system, but we never saw it. Though McCown played decent against the Oakland Raiders last weekend with 341 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, the team lost. Cleveland won the only game in which Manziel started.

Earlier this week, a report that cited anonymous sources claimed several Browns players are furious that Manziel is riding the bench. DeFilippo wasn’t about to discuss that.

“I don’t deal well with anonymous sources,” he said. “To me, that’s cowardly.”

We highly doubt TMZ would pretend they spoke with Browns players if they didn’t despite, certain players bashing the report. McCown may be safer, but Manziel offers a glimmer of hope for the future. Browns fans want to see him play.
