Browns offense appears to be ‘moving on’ from Johnny Manziel
The Cleveland Browns are changing their offensive approach for the upcoming season, and the new plan makes it seem like they are moving on from Johnny Manziel.
Browns reporter Tony Grossi published an article Friday morning containing some of his observations from Cleveland’s OTAs. He notes that the offense is trying to switch to a running game-dominant plan where the quarterback is asked to manage the game and not make mistakes. That type of style is more suited for new quarterback Josh McCown than flashy 2014 first-round pick Johnny Manziel, who was a playmaker and Heisman Trophy winner at Texas A&M.
As a result, Grossi describes Manziel as a “fish out of water.” He also says Manziel’s skills do not “coincide with what the Browns are asking of their quarterback.”
It’s no surprise that the Browns are doing this. Their defense was ninth in the league last season in points allowed and should be even better next season. Their best chance of success (without having a real stud QB) is by playing good defense and not making mistakes on offense, which is exactly what they’re doing.
Manziel might be much different from how he was last year, which is important. He needs to work hard and act like an NFL quarterback in case his opportunity to play comes. Unfortunately he screwed up so badly in his rookie season that his chances to get a shot have decreased dramatically.
