Browns rookie Antonio Callaway cited for marijuana possession

Cleveland Browns rookie wide receiver Antonio Callaway was a first-round talent who fell all the way to the fourth round of the NFL Draft because of his poor off-field decisions, and it would appear he has not learned his lesson.

Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland reports that Callaway was stopped by police for a traffic violation early Sunday morning and cited for possession of marijuana. The former Florida star was also found to be driving with a suspended license.

The officer who arrested Callaway said he observed the 21-year-old failing to yield to oncoming traffic and found him to be in possession of a “small amount” of marijuana during the traffic stop. The amount was small enough to be considered a minor misdemeanor under Ohio law.

As Grossi notes, Callaway may not have informed the Browns of the incident. The rookie was promoted to the first-team offense at training camp on Monday after Cleveland traded wide receiver Corey Coleman, and it’s possible those moves would not have been made if the team knew of Callaway’s citation.

The sky was seemingly the limit for Callaway after he had an All-American season his freshman year with the Gators in 2015, but he has not been able to stay out of trouble off the field. He had a marijuana arrest last year and was one of the Florida players involved in a credit card fraud matter that led to multiple suspensions. He then failed a drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine and later took responsibility for his actions.
