Bucs looking to trade Darrelle Revis, could release him

Darrelle RevisDarrelle Revis’ stay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is looking like it will be an extremely brief one.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bucs are looking to trade Revis. If they are unable to deal him, they will likely release him by Wednesday afternoon.

There are two reasons why the Bucs would release him this week. Revis is due a $1.5 million bonus on Wednesday if he is on the team’s roster. Also, the fourth-round draft pick the Bucs traded to the New York Jets to get the cornerback would turn into a third-round pick if they keep him on the roster.

The Bucs prefer to keep the $1.5 million and higher draft pick rather than pay Revis the $16 million he’s due to make next season.

Schefter mentions that the Bucs have been looking to deal Revis since the combine, but no teams have been interesting in dealing for him at his current price.

If the Bucs end up getting rid of Revis, they will have traded the 13th overall pick in last year’s draft and a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft for one season of Revis, who was coming off knee surgery. The Jets used the pick to draft defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, who was named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year last season.
