Cam Newton: ‘Great discussion’ with Roger Goodell over hits

Cam Newton

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton chatted with Roger Goodell over his recent history of hits, and he was happy with what he heard.

Newton said Wednesday that he had renewed hope that referees would keep a closer eye on illegal hits against him, saying that he and Goodell had a “great discussion.”

“I got my point across, he got his point across,” Newton said, via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk. “We’ll see Sunday and moving forward.”

Newton clarified that he understands he’ll be hit when he leaves the pocket, but that is not what he’s asking to be officiated more tightly.

“In the pocket, that’s all I’m asking for,” Newton said.

Newton said he didn’t feel safe on the field. You can bet that he told Goodell as much when he chatted with him, and we’ll see if it changes anything going forward.
