Cardinals expected to release Adrian Peterson

Adrian Peterson

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to release veteran running back Adrian Peterson, according to a report.

Peterson signed a two-year deal with the New Orleans Saints last offseason and was traded to the Cardinals early in the season, so he is still under contract with Arizona for 2018. He is scheduled to count $3.5 million against the salary cap, and Mike Jurecki of 98.7 FM Arizona Sports has been told Peterson will likely be released.

Peterson finished the 2017 season with 529 yards and two touchdowns on 156 rushing attempts. His brief stint with the Saints was a disaster, but the 32-year-old seemed to show he had something left in the tank when he ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns in his Cardinals debut. Peterson didn’t do much after that, however, and was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury that he suffered in Week 12.

While he has not played a ton, Peterson has now averaged just 2.8 yards per carry over the last two seasons. Despite what he said in December about his playing future, it’s fair to wonder if we have seen the last of the 32-year-old in the NFL.
