Carson Wentz ‘really confident’ he will be cleared by Week 1

Carson Wentz

Carson Wentz tore his ACL so late in the 2017 season that there has been some talk about him sitting out to start the upcoming season as well, but the quarterback does not envision that happening.

In an appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” Monday, Wentz said his rehab has been coming along as well as he could have hoped. As of now, he fully expects to be ready to play in Week 1.

“Rehab has been great. Obviously, it’s not fun,” Wentz said. “It’s quite the process. It can be painful some days. But so far everything is going well. Where I’m at I’m very confident. My goal is to be ready Week 1.

“I’m very confident. It’s a fluid process, so you never know how it’s going to go, but where we’re at, just trying to do what the doctors say and just take it step by step. There are times when you feel great and want to push it more, but you’ve got to stay the course with what the doctors are saying. I feel really good and really confident for Week 1.”

Wentz tore both his ACL and LCL on Dec. 10, and the typical recovery timeline for such an injury is 9-12 months. If he were to be ready for the start of the regular season, that would be about the eight-month mark. Of course, the Eagles have the luxury of having a second-string quarterback who just led them to a Super Bowl win, so they have no reason to rush Wentz back.

The Eagles are said to have turned down some pretty strong offers for Foles this offseason, and the uncertainty surrounding Wentz’s rehab is the primary reason for that. If Wentz is fully healthy and cleared, he’ll get his starting job back immediately. If he’s anything less than 100 percent, we’ll see Foles again to start the season.
