Report: Carson Wentz unlikely to play in preseason

Carson Wentz

Carson Wentz has consistently said that his rehab is going well and that he plans to be ready for Week 1 of the NFL season, but we may have to wait until then to see him in a full-speed game.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Sunday that the Eagles have been pleased with what they’ve seen from Wentz this offseason and are relieved he has not suffered any setbacks in his recovery from a torn ACL. However, Rapoport does not expect the quarterback to play in the preseason.

“Here’s what I’m told — I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we did not see him in a preseason game,” Rapoport said. “Why would they? Why risk it? That’s one thing that’s been pretty clear here.”

That certainly makes sense, as there’s no reason to risk Wentz taking some sort of hit in a meaningless game. While it may be important for him to get actual game reps after he missed significant time down the stretch last year, the Eagles would probably rather watch him shake off the rust over the first few games of the regular season.

While Wentz insists he feels healthy, Eagles coach Doug Pederson made some comments recently that indicated the 25-year-old still has a lot of work to do.
