Report: Carson Wentz unlikely to see any playing time this season

Carson Wentz

We all know how Sam Bradford felt about the Philadelphia Eagles trading up to draft Carson Wentz, but it sounds like the veteran does not have to worry about losing his job to the rookie this year.

In his lengthy report from Eagles training camp, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com predicted that Wentz, who is dealing with a rib fracture, won’t see the field at all during the regular season.

I can’t imagine he plays this week and we’ll see if he can do anything in the fourth preseason game (though with starting linemen likely to play so little, that might not make sense). This is looking like a redshirt year for him (unless the Eagles fall way out of contention quickly. In the meantime the rookie is trying to absorb as much as he can. “It’s just one of those things that takes some time (to heal),” he said.

The Eagles were in no rush with Wentz, anyway. They signed Bradford to a two-year contract this past offseason for a reason. Although he doesn’t like it, Bradford is likely a temporary bridge to Wentz. For the time being, it sounds as though even Chase Daniel is ahead of Wentz on the depth chart.

We heard some reports about Wentz’s development earlier this month that made it seem like the rookie could have a big role, but it would likely take a disaster of a season in Philly for that to happen.
