Chad Ochocinco reportedly released because of poor ‘football IQ’

Chad Ochocinco was released by the Patriots on Thursday after an unsuccessful season with the team. The primary reason for his release is that he never could pick up the Patriots’ offense. Or, as Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe put it, Ochocinco lacked “football IQ.”

Bedard’s report states:

According to multiple sources, he just doesn’t have the football I.Q. that he appeared to have while with the Bengals. The Patriots would literally tell him to run a route a certain way, and a minute later he would run it the other way. It happened all the time.

The Patriots offense gives receivers several options when they’re running routes based on what the defense is giving them. Ochocinco apparently could never figure things out.

Though this report may bring some clarity to people who were wondering why Chad was released, it’s hardly a surprise. Anyone who watched the Pats last season could tell he looked lost on the field. Chad even voiced complaints along those lines.

Reading a report saying Ochocinco was cut by the Pats because he lacked “football IQ” is like hearing that the X-rays for a guy whose leg snapped confirmed that he has a broken tibia.
