Chaz Schilens upset with Jets fans for Tim Tebow chants during ‘humiliating’ loss

New York Jets wide receiver Chaz Schilens admits the team’s 30-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday was “humiliating,” but he’s upset with the fans who began chanting for Tim Tebow to replace Mark Sanchez at quarterback.

“That chant is BS… I think the fans are out of place,” Schilens said after the game, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “They’re pissed. They have a right to be pissed.”

Schilens backed Sanchez as the team’s starter, saying “Mark’s the QB.” He also seemed to pin some of the blame on the Jets offensive line.

“He was under a lot of pressure, that’s all I have to say,” Schilens said, via Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday.

The Jets hardly had anything going on Sunday. They were down 20-0 at halftime and 27-3 after three quarters. Sanchez was sacked four times and finished 28/54 for 283 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Most of his stats came on two fourth quarter drives, including one that culminated in a touchdown pass to Schilens.

Did the team getting blown out lead head coach Rex Ryan to consider pulling Sanchez for Tebow?

“I just never thought it was the time to do it. Mark’s our QB,” Ryan said.

The Jets may have many offensive skill players injured, but maybe they need to consider going to Tebow. After losing 4 of their last 5 to go 3-5 on the season, how much worse could things get with Tebow at quarterback? Perhaps it’s time to find out.

Once you “go for Tebow” you are giving up on Sanchez long term and have to look for a real option at QB.  Now is it that Sanhez is this bad, or is it a lack of protection/recievers/gameplan?   With system wide problems, you cannot pin this on the QB alone.  I doubt any NFL coaching group would think Tebow is a legitimate starting long term QB and his being with the Jets at this point can be viewed as anything but a desperate attempt to sell jerseys and tickets to those easily swayed as a fad.  If this was not true, Tebow would have had more reps and better stats to show for himself.  If you pull Sanchez, you go to the #3 QB and give him experience and use the Tebow circus 3-5 plays a game.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

Jets are a joke. If you didn’t want these questions, why did you bring him in. He is not a RB or WR. Rex is a dumbass

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/LT3C7IWSPDZQVSSY4BS6BUZPIQ Dave

The fans have no clue.   the kid they drafted last year  would be a better QB than Tebow.  Problem right now, is that there are 10 other players on offense, that would have a hard time competing in the Arena Football League, based on their effort for much of this season, so far.  Maybe they might as well Throw Tebow out there, even though the kid might be better, because, there is no sense in throwing the kid out there, as a sacrificial lamb for opposing defenses

  • Kevin Cantor

I hate this nonsense that if you bench Sanchez you’ve “lost him” and “shattered his confidence” etc etc.

If a quarterback is ready to give up on a team because he is benched, if that destroys his confidence, I don’t want that player anywhere near my team. This is football, this is a tough game, and if your mental state is that fragile you will never take a team to the Super Bowl. And isn’t that the goal of every team in this league?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SKBFOHNFOZ3RDT5MDB36MFI6BY Otis

At the rate things are going, you might see Sanchez on the bench soon, and Rex gone after the season.  There have been two implosions in just eight games.  Even with the injuries, the Jets are going downhill fast.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3U2RR7PMUMOBOGDBMD5LQ4S6JI Jason

Tebow isn’t this team’s problem.  Sanchez isn’t this team’s problem.  A team takes on the personality of it’s leader.  The Ryan’s are a bunch of fat, undisciplined douche bags.  So the Jets play as such.  You need a man to lead.  Not a fat kid, loud mouth.  Chuck Knoll, Tom Landry, Bill Snyder, Bill Belicheck, John Wooden, Joe Gibbs.  Great men, great success.  This isn’t a coincidence.

  • Gregory Carroll

no, you got it wrong:   If the Jets turn to Tebow it would be because they haven’t faith in Sanchez being able to get it done or Sanchez would remain the starter.  This is not “nonsense” about destroying his confidence.  It is about a Franchise starting the player they feel gives them the best chance to win, and if that means benching Sanchez for Tebow then that means Sanchez is done with the Jets.  If they believe Sanchez is the future, they leave him in to learn and hopefully improve.  I believe neither Sanchez nor Tebow have demonstrated they are worthy of starting in the NFL at QB.  You may say Sanchez went to the AFC championship his first two seasons, but that was due to a punishing run game and stout defense which neither are present now.  Pete Carroll said he wasn’t ready to leave USC and we see why.  Tebows lack of QB ability has been well documented.  I wouldn’t want these jokes leading any team I am interested in.

Hmm, last year if I remember right, Tebow beat the Dolphins . . . at quarterback . . . with what was supposed to be a very poor team. And what was written then was “So what, he beat the Dolphins. No big deal.” How about Tebow be allowed to throw and Sanchez be asked to block for a while?

  • Mike Dugas

He’s yelling at the wrong people.  The Jets took Tebow, they had to know there would be some flak over it.  Sanchez was playing like crap….they aren’t even making a real effort to do anything worth while with Tebow.  Any heat or grief over Tebow is all on the Jets and Ryan.  Either figure out a way to use him but quit crying about it.

  • headman2

Alex Smith was benched for multiple journeymen QB’s during his first 6 years in the NFL. Look where he is now. And A. Smith had more pressure on him than Sanchez ever will being a #1 overall draft pick.

  • samariumrgw

Sanchez and Romo both lack ability under pressure

  • http://twitter.com/rodster213 Terrell Randall

Just trade Tebow. You don’t use him for his worth. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind a trade to Jax by now.

Im seeing players and coaches attacking fans for expressing how they feel. These overpaid people need to realize who pays their paychecks.

  • http://nosacredc0w.wordpress.com NoSacredCow

Tebow is just building up his name recognition for starting his own ministry. He only wants to play to build up hjis “brand” Why do you think he trademarked “tebowing”?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_665SXQ2LAARLPRNLZC6KPADGFI John

What is this we have to protect Sanchez by not allowing Tebow a shot.  The question is: DO THE JETS WANT TO BE IN THE PLAYOFFS?   Sanchez is not cutting it.  This is the NFL, not the Pop Wanner League.

I’s sick of hearing Sanchez teammates whining about how good he is; and dissing Tebow, a fellow team member.    That in itself tells you a lot about the Jets team.   Get over it, Tebow has “IT” and Sanchez does not.

The FANS want HOPE and something to cheer about.   We have a shot with Tebow; Sanchez is not getting the job done!

  • carson1989

I’m reading all these comments and shaking my head.  Wake up people!  The Jets need a leader, Sanchez nor Rex Ryan can lead their team.  Maybe Tebow can lead them, who knows but they need to give it a shot.  It seems the offensive line has no inspiration.  Place blame where it should go and uninspired offensive line and the defensive line is not all that inspired either.  They had one of the best defenses in the league. Revis is out, They all need to step up.  They are not playing like a cohesive team.  The weight of the team can rest on one man’s shoulder’s offensively or defensively. Sanchez seems to go further downhill each year, I see no improvement.  Give the kid (Tebow) a shot, maybe with time and mentoring he can be a great QB.   Something needs to change. Your all just focusing on hating Tebow and not seeing the bigger picture here.   Next year, The Jets better make some quality draft picks!!!!!

  • BigPeaches

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results!  SOMETHING has to change so you might as well try Tebow!!  Or do nothing and keep losing, your choice!

  • Yogi Bear

The Tebow haters should consider what the guy has done in the past. He may not fit your mold of a perfect quarterback, but isn’t it about moving the ball, scoring, and winning? The Jets coaches are idiots they way the use Tebow now. You need imaginative coaches who know how to use a QB like Tebow. Sorry for the fans who have to endure another season of watching coaching incompetence.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PX3FJU327OXQKYPM42CRAHSFQQ Sausen

He trademarked Tebowing because people were starting to do dumb things with it.

  • Sonny8044

It seems to me Denver was in the same predicament last year and Tebow got them to the Champship game. Give the kid a chance, you really having nothing to lose. Ryan would be an idiot not to make the change now, the Jets were flatter then a door nail yesterday.

  • Sonny8044

I really think Tebow would breath some life into this team, who seemed like walking dead yesterday, just going through the motions,  or otherwise fire Rex.

  • CharlieBrowniest

You New York fans are something else.  You just got beat by Miami (?!) at home.  Let Tebow play a game while Sanchez sits for a game.  What do you have to lose?  You’re not going to make the playoffs anyway.  If Tebow plays bad and you still lose, then you silence the Tebow chants and at least Sanchez has a chance to view the game from a different perspective.  If Tebow plays good and even just ok and you win, then you keep playing him.  He has a national championship and a playoff victory to his credit.  The game is changing and Ryan remains entrenched in old-style football.

If the seats are empty, who gets paid? Pleasing the fans should be first.

  • Scott Edwards

In your own words “go to the #3 QB” if going to Tebow would make Sanchez feel shattered, going to the #3 is really going to make his day. If the Jets want to be start being serious then they have to give Tebow more playing time and thats where almost any inteligent coach would have put their backup in, is in this game after they got so far behind. But the Jets coaching staff has their heads up thier behinds, maybe when the air clears their minds will also. If you want to win you always go with your 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd, and 4th if you can find one who will warm the bench for you.

  • TimMcDonald

Well they aren’t winning with Sanchez.  But gee, he throws such a pretty ball.   Who wants to win in an ugly ground game like you will get with Tebow?    I’m sure the Broncos hated every minute of going to the playoffs without “style points”.

  • King_Solomon1

  • opropr

The Jet should make a change to see what Tim Tebow can do; when other player aren’t performing they get pull.   It may be that Sanchez like Vick is trying to hard to win with a bad line.    If they are team mates they should spell each other when things are not going for them, not competing against each othter.   Why trade for anyone if you are not going to use them.  LJP

  • Brian Cunningham

Who in the heck is Chaz Schilens?

  • john0362

Hey it’s Rex’s fault bringing Tebow to NY in the first place.  Did you not think the fans would turn the minute Sanchez struggled?  I guess he wasn’t paying attention on what happened in Denver last year.  Or it’s a good deflection to take the focus off of him and how bad a coach he really is!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/D6MNNS54EDR5EH5OIOJQ37Q3E4 Sergio

The Quarterback is suppose to be the leader of the team, and lets face it, Sanchez is not doing a good job. He is making poor decisions in the pocket and making way too many throwing mistakes. He is not a rookie QB, he should by now have learned to feel pocket pressure and avoid a sack. Throw the ball away or if you are going to take a sack, learn how to hold on to the damn ball. Also way too many balls are being batted down by the defensive line. The Jets need a spark. It is not uncommon for football teams to replace there starter mid season. It’s happened before. Ryan needs to do whats best for the offense, swallow his pride and play Tebow or McElroy.

  • Chip56

A win is a win, even an ugly win. Some great teams have done it on the ground. Ken Stabler had a ugly 40 yar pass, but he knew he game.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/D6MNNS54EDR5EH5OIOJQ37Q3E4 Sergio

Sanchez has no heart or fire in his eyes. He’s just going through the motions. He needs to ride the bench now!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/SXBHLZ2CDWCJEDNASBILETCQHQ Griz

Rex Ryan is going to stick with Sanchez until they are both applying for jobs in the arena league next year.

  • http://twitter.com/CLO164 Marco LeMaire

NFL players get paid a lot of money. The Fans that buy tickets, clothing, etc,.. make some of that money. If a player or coach cannot produce after 4 years is time to make changes. After yesterdays lost and watching rex and sanchez explain, it is time for them to go. There are assisting coaches who can atleast bring a change. We (Jets) have won one superbowl. After rex said it is what he says that matter, if I was the owner todays headlines would be rex head coach of the jets just been fired and sanchez benched.

Tebow is the man he can lead and he play,he knows football. He needs to get away from all the yankees and go home where football is the game…AND HE IS THE MAN…..He doesn’t go around trying to act a big shot ,he is a good man and there are so may evil people…It must be a big weight to try and play with a team thats jealous of your abilities and don’t support you as a team mate…GO TEBOW..YOU ARE THE WINNER NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE AND WHAT TRAILS YOU HAVE TO BEAR..

Tim Tebow is a winner you can say whatyou want he is a winner he has won at every part  of   his career and New York loves winners not loser Sanchez is not a winner

Feel bad for the Jets.  This appears to be a very hard decision for them.  Sadly, the losing streak says it all.  Now the moral of the entire team is on the line and faithful fans are disappointed that nothing is being done to turn the tide.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/JTM27JLQPYSV7ZYUVP45MDTRPE FUNSHIPM174

Eli Manning was never benched and the Giants stuck with him. If you decide to do any diligence, Sanchez’s numbers are identical to the numbers he produced when the Jets were in the Championships games. The talent around him has gone and not been replaced.

Either build more talent around him or trade him.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/JTM27JLQPYSV7ZYUVP45MDTRPE FUNSHIPM174

The JETS only got tebow to sell seats…period. If he is so talented, why didn’t any other team go after him?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_C4Z4SQXAX62JCVG2NC56Z32M2E c

You forget…he lost to Bama and he had so much Urban Meyer talent around him.
OH..And he can’t beat the Pats or Bills (LOL…137-20 in three games) and he lost 4 of his last 5 as a starter. He also frequently loses throws to the dirt and the only thing he can’t lose is his virginity.

    Nice try moron.

Great QB’s make those around them better.  Tony Romo is no great QB, but he did erase a 23-0 hole.  The problem with Sanchez is that no one ever put that 1001, 1002, 10003 clock in his head.  At 56 years of age, I could play that position better than Sanchez has played it. If you hold on the ball long enough in the pocket you will either take a sack or cough up a fumble. After 1003, hit an open reciever, or, take off to the sideline and either throw the ball out of bounds or run out of bounds.  How hard is that concept to comprehend.

Brady, Mannings, Breeze. These guys lead high powered offences and teams to superbowls. Cutler, Smith, and Sanchez can obviously throw a ball but they do not lead
