Report: Chiefs prefer to keep Patrick Mahomes on bench for two years
The Kansas City Chiefs are thinking long-term with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
KC traded up with Buffalo to draft Mahomes at the No. 10 spot this year. They surrendered their No. 27 overall pick in 2017 as well as their first-round pick next year to get the Texas Tech product.
The Chiefs have said all along that they believe Mahomes is a project and that they would want him to sit behind Alex Smith for a year. Now NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport says the Chiefs would love to have Mahomes sit for two years.

Kansas City’s GM recently said Smith was far ahead of Mahomes mentally, which isn’t too hard to believe. But excuse us for thinking it would be a stretch for Kansas City to keep Mahomes on the bench two full years after investing so much into him.
