Chiefs let Tamba Hali’s contract void

Tamba HaliTamba Hali’s contract with the Kansas City Chiefs has voided, making the linebacker a free agent, according to a report.

The Chiefs had until Friday to reach a deal with Hali before his contract would void. They reworked his contract last year to give them some salary cap relief, but that added four voidable years to the contract. The Kansas City Star says one of the consequences of the contract voiding is that $4 million will count against the Chiefs’ cap for the upcoming season even if they re-sign Hali, which is still a possibility.

Hali is 32 and had surgery after the season to clean up his knee. He had 48 tackles and 6.5 sacks last season and remains a solid pass-rusher.

If the Chiefs don’t re-sign Hali, 2014 first-round pick Dee Ford could see a larger role.
