Report: Chip Kelly might have to ‘beg’ NFL teams for job

Chip Kelly

Chip Kelly may have some trouble finding another head coaching job in the NFL with the way things ended in Philadelphia.

While Kelly has seemingly been linked to just about every current and potential coaching vacancy, Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole spoke to two NFL owners who say they are not impressed with his inability to relate to players at the NFL level.

“It was not so much the X’s and O’s part those owners talked about. It was the executive function that Kelly seemed to lack,” Cole said Monday. “One of the things they came away with was that the statement Kelly gave last week where he talked about how much he loved his players was a clear indication of how he didn’t understand (his players).”

Cole added that the owners felt Kelly’s statement — which was somewhat delusional given the things some of his players have said about him — came across as the former Oregon coach having to “beg” for another chance in the NFL.

“What they see is a coach who does not know how to relate to players or motivate players at the professional level,” Cole said.

So why all the perceived interest from teams? It’s possible that Kelly’s people are reaching out, not the other way around. That seems to be what has already happened with one team.

At the end of the day, Kelly put together two 10-win seasons with the Eagles before finishing 7-9 this year. He has shown he can win games at the NFL level, but it’s the lack of respect he had in the locker room that will give teams pause.
