Redskins RB Chris Thompson gets free candy, custom socks from Starburst

Chris-Thompson-RedskinsEarlier this month, Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson revealed an interesting tidbit about himself and one of his gameday superstitions. Since high school, the former Florida State star has been keeping a Starburst candy in his sock during games.

“I have to have a yellow and a red Starburst, and I eat one before the game and I put the other one in my sock,” Thompson said, via Sarah Kogod of DC Sports Bog. “Yeah, it sounds kinda nasty, but I mean, I’ve done it ever since high school.”

Thompson eats the yellow candy before the game and enjoys the red one at halftime. When Starburst caught wind of the unique habit, they knew they had to capitalize on a marketing opportunity.

“We wanted to send you a stash of Starburst to keep your ritual going throughout your rookie season, as well as customized Starburst socks to help keep gamedays extra juicy,” the candy company wrote in a letter to the rookie. “We know you’re a big fan of the red and yellow Starburst, but we included the whole pack so you could share your favorite candies with your new teammates.”

As we know, Thompson is not the only NFL player who has made candy an important part of his football career. Marshawn Lynch gave Skittles some tremendous free advertising a few years back after this famous image was captured. Some grown men just can’t live without their sweets.
