Clay Matthews unhappy with NFL handling of PED probe: ‘Sets a dangerous precedent’

Clay Matthews is not happy with the NFL’s enforced interview process as part of their Al-Jazeera investigation.

Matthews spoke out against the NFL on Thursday, saying that he’s not comfortable that the league could successfully coerce players into submitting for interviews despite no credible evidence linking them to PED usage.

“That’s why we stuck strong with the [players’ association] in regards to this,” Matthews told Ryan Wood of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Just because it sets a dangerous precedent. I think this is something that’ll come up within the next negotiations, CBA negotiations. It’s a very dangerous precedent.”

Matthews said that he and teammate Julius Peppers had no intention of taking the fall in order to make a statement once the NFL threatened to suspend them for not cooperating.

“We weren’t ready to fall on the knife for something we’ve maintained our innocence about,” Matthews said. “Obviously, the interview proved that (we were innocent). It’s exactly that. Especially with the regular season starting, yeah, it’s good to get all that behind us and focused on the regular season starting with Jacksonville next week.”

Matthews isn’t the only player accused who was unhappy with how the NFL handled things. He is likely right — expect this to come up in the next CBA negotiations.
